CHAPTER THIRTEEN
As the next song started Bull came over and asked Jamie to dance. As he led into the slow tune, Bull asked Jamie why he hadn’t danced with Gary Sayer. “Even though we’re not on a date or anything like that, I came with you and I’m wearing your collar for the evening. It wouldn’t be right.”
That gave Bull something to think about. Whenever I brought Tommy to a club, he danced with anyone that asked and if they didn’t ask, he asked them. I got so angry watching him gyrating his ass against someone else’s cock. We weren’t in love, but I still remember being pissed off. Maybe I felt more for Tommy than I thought I did; maybe that’s why I was so angry when he betrayed me. Maybe I’m in denial over what I feel for Jamie too.
Bull kept dancing after the music stopped. Jamie had to poke him to make him stop. “You were definitely somewhere else.”
“Another time, another place, not a good memory…” Bull said cryptically. They sat down at the subs’ table.
“You haven’t eaten anything. We have plenty here. Why don’t you have some oysters, nachos, or some shrimp?” Jamie asked.
“You don’t want me to have any oysters. They’re an aphrodisiac.” Bull smiled. Let’s see what he says to that. Bull picked at the shrimp, since Brian had ordered another platter.
“Eat all the oysters you want, Mischief always wants to cuddle,” Jamie teased.
Bull got serious as the band started to play a slow song. “Dance with me again, I promise I won’t go somewhere else in my head this time.” This time they played ‘Jersey Girl’, and Bull asked, “You’re a dyed–in-the-wool Jersey Boy aren’t you?”
“Yeah, where are you from? I know it’s somewhere down south but I’m not sure where.”
“Originally, I came from Virginia but we moved a lot, mostly in the south. My father was an executive at an oil company and we were in Texas, Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and Alabama. He went to Alaska for a while and we went back to Virginia for the two years he was gone. Mama didn’t like the cold,” Bull mused.
“You sound like you had an idyllic childhood. You’ve…heard about mine,” Jamie said flatly.
“It wasn’t great that we moved around all the time, but Mama and I learned to adapt to changing houses and schools every couple of years. It isn’t as if it was Dad’s fault, he was the on-site executive and had to be where they were pumping. They died in a car accident when I was twenty-two. Thank God they didn’t live to see what a mess I made out of my life,” Bull said bitterly.
“You’re young yet. You have a long time before you can say you made a mess. Did they know you were gay?” Jamie asked, curiosity getting the better of him.
“I think they suspected. That’s why they didn’t want me to go to Annapolis and into the service. But I thought that DADT would be repealed and I’d have my chosen career and eventually a partner too.
